Oahu was home to 953,207 people in 2010 (approximately 72% of people of the state). Oahu is known as the “Gathering Place”.  Oahu is diamond-shaped, surrounded by ocean and divided by mountain ranges. Oahu has a population density of 1,636 /sq mi (631.7 /km2). Census data from 2010 to 2018 shows Oahu’s total population decreased by 62,000.

Net migration loss on Oahu from 2016 to 2017 was more than 14,000, while about 13,000 more people departed than arrived between 2017 and 2018. Oahu county people previously headed for 1 million dropped from nearly 993,000 in 2016 to 980,000 by 2018, figures showed.

No other county experienced a population drop. Reason for population drop is Oahu’s high cost of living and employment in mainland states. Hawaii’s population also fell from nearly 1.43 million in 2016 to 1.42 million in 2018. Oahu has a population density of 1,636 people per square miles.

Oahu’s population consists of mixed races to which Oahu’s diverse culture and colourful traditions are attributed. Native Hawaiians still make up the majority of residents in Oahu, but the rest consists of immigrants who found their way to Oahu.

Oahu has many nicknames one of them being “rainbow state.” This is because rainbows are a common sight in Hawaiʻi due to the frequent rain showers. Estimates show that the population actually declined in 2016. Prior to this, Oahu population was growing slowly. There is nothing to indicate that this trend will turn around, and slow population growth of Oahu is expected, at least in the near future. Oahu covers an area of 596.7 sq mi (1,545 km2).
